NORTH 2 GROUP IV: HUNTERDON CENTRAL 23, PISCATAWAY 13
CLAMPED DOWN - Red Devils' D too much for Piscataway
Home News Tribune Online 12/2/07  -  By GREG TUFARO  -  STAFF WRITER
PISCATAWAY — The Hunterdon Central High School football team took the field for Saturday's North 2 Group IV final against Piscataway shorthanded, but no one would ever know it considering how well the Red Devils performed defensively.

Playing without two starting linebackers, including its team-leading tackler, Hunterdon Central still managed to contain Middlesex County's most potent offense as the Chiefs were shut out for the game's final 31:46 en route to a 23-13 Red Devils win before a crowd of 7,000 at Rutgers Stadium.     more

COLONIA 28, WOODBRIDGE 13  -  LeGrand ends stellar career in Patriots' win
Home News Tribune Online 11/18/07  -  By JOHN NOLAN - CORESPONDENT
WOODBRIDGE — Eric LeGrand finished his storied career at Colonia High School with a bang Saturday, as he led the Patriots (7-3) to a 28-13 victory over the rival Barrons (4-6) in the annual "Bragging Rights Battle," the season-ending contest for both football teams.

NOTICE:  The November 17th "Bragging Rights Trophy" Game against the Colonia Patriots will be played in Woodbridge at Nick Priscoe Stadium on the newly installed turf field.  Colonia will be recorded as the home team and Woodbridge visitors.  The contest will begin at 12 noon.  This will be the 41st meeting between the rival Township schools.  The Patriots hold the edge in wins with 21 to the Barrons 15.  There have also been 4 tie games.
In 2005, Woodbridge Police Detective Dean Janowski and Sgt. Charles McDevitt (Retired), with the support of the Woodbridge PBA and SOA, helped to establish the "Bragging Rights Trophy".  It is awarded to school that wins the annual contest, and is presented by the PBA / SOA on the field at the conclusion of the game.  The trophy is inscribed with all past games including the year, winning team and score.  The Colonia Patriots have won the past two games and have held the award at their school since that initial presentation.

PISCATAWAY — On a football team stuffed chock full of stars at almost every position, Barry Garrard still never fails to stand out.  The senior tailback shattered the Piscataway High School career rushing yardage record and tied the team's all-time scoring mark to help the unbeaten Chiefs (9-0) roll over Woodbridge 27-7 Saturday in a NJSIAA North 2 Group IV quarterfinal.   more

"MY THOUGHTS – Rankings are only a number!

Home News Tribune Online 11/09/07  -   By MARK SPIVEY  -  STAFF WRITER
It isn't going out on too much of a limb to say the rematch will be closer than the first game these teams played this year, which resulted in a 45-6 Chiefs win. But the Barrons could certainly make a game of this if they stick to their bread and butter: a pounding running attack and a bend-but-don't-break defense. In the end, though, Piscataway just has too much firepower.     Prediction: Piscataway, 34-14.

Chiefs ready to take Barrons to school
Home News Tribune Online 11/9/07  By MARK SPIVEY - STAFF WRITER
The lesson the Piscataway High School football team learned about not looking ahead last season, when the second-seeded Chiefs were upset 13-12 by No. 7 Linden in the first round of the state playoffs, appeared well-applied when it won the first eight games of this regular season.

45 – 6 !  That was the butt whipping Piscataway laid on Woodbridge in week two this year.  Did they really earn all those points, or did the Barrons implode because big bad Piscataway was in town?

"MY THOUGHTS – PCT pushes Woodbridge into the Playoffs!
Barrons Sideline - www.WoodbridgeFootball.com 10-28-2007 By: CHARLES MCDEVITT
Passaic County Tech (4-4) defeated West Orange (3-5)  28-7, on Sunday, October 28, 2007.  The win by PCT, 1 residual PP for Woodbridge, guaranteed the Barrons an NJSIAA  NJ2-G4 Playoff berth!
With the conclusion of this week games, Woodbridge will post 42 Power Points (PP).  The Edison Eagles, the only team that could have knocked the Barrons from the playoffs, posted 34 PP.
Edison (3-4) has the potential to add 8 more PP to their total with a win next week against Perth Amboy (0-7), and 1 residual point from the winner of the East Brunswick / North Brunswick game, for a final season total of 43 PP.  However, a win by the Eagles will also contribute 1 more residual PP to Woodbridge making their season total 43 PP!
The NJSIAA states “head to head competition” is the first tie-breaker of PP totals.  Woodbridge defeated Edison 20-14 in OT back in week 5, thereby placing Woodbridge ahead of Edison in the final standings, and a minimum 8th place berth.
Although the potential for Woodbridge to move up in the standings exists, the smart money indicates an 8th place finish and a trip to Piscataway to face the 1st place Chiefs.  The overall record of the Woodbridge Barrons against the Piscataway Chiefs is  10 – 11 – 1.  The Chiefs are the GMC Red Division Champions for 2007 and a formidable opponent.  To call yourself a champion, you have to defeat the best competition.  No better team to start with than the Piscataway Chiefs!
Snap up boys!  Game Day is coming November 10, 2007, 1pm at P-Way!

Vikings qualify for states - Recover from 0-3 beginning
Home News Tribune Online 10/27/07  By MARK SPIVEY - STAFF WRITER
WOODBRIDGE — When the South Brunswick High School football team lost its first three games of the season, but head coach Rick Mantz continued to insist the team was capable of earning a state playoffs berth, a small, select group of people believed even an ounce of what he was saying.

Barrons, Vikings thinking postseason
Home News Tribune Online 10/26/07  By MARK SPIVEY - STAFF WRITER
Considering the Woodbridge and South Brunswick high school football teams both enter the day at 4-3, equally desperate for a win to just about lock up state playoff berths, one might assume tonight's 7 p.m. matchup between the two would play a little tight.

SOUTH BRUNSWICK (4-3) at WOODBRIDGE (4-3), 7 p.m.
Home News Tribune Online 10/26/07  -   By MARK SPIVEY  -  STAFF WRITER
The Vikings win by either (a) getting a huge game from Mohamed Sanu or (b) getting opposing defenses to focus so much on Sanu that they don't pay enough attention to their other capable backs. The Barrons win by keeping things close, having played six games decided by single digits thus far. This one should be a classic.   Prediction: South Brunswick, 20-16.

This is week 8 of 9.  The Woodbridge Barrons (4-3) will wrap-up their regular season on Friday night, October 26, 2007 at 7pm, home against the South Brunswick Vikings (4-3).  Both teams need a victory to guarantee a playoff berth in the NJSIAA Playoffs.  South Brunswick is competing in CJ – G4, and Woodbridge in NJ2 – G4.  Elimination from the playoffs is a possibility for the loser.

You've got Woodbridge finding its groove on offense of late, as tailback Deshawn Knight has had his best two games of the season back-to-back; and you've got Old Bridge having trouble stopping the run, ranking 24th among 27 area teams in scoring defense. The Barrons can smell the playoffs at this point, and they won't be denied.
Prediction: Woodbridge, 24-10

You've got to love those football teams which lean on a rugged, physical defense to give them a fighting chance to win every time they take the field. Woodbridge is one of those squads. It'll have its hands full stopping Hawks tailback Jahyere Bryant, who is coming off his best two games of the season, while the Barrons' Deshawn Knight is coming off a season-high 127 yards in a win over Edison last Friday.  Prediction: Woodbridge, 17-13.

WOODBRIDGE — In the second half of Friday night's game against Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division rival Edison and its stingy defense, the Woodbridge High School football team's offense was responsible for more punts (four) and nearly as many turnovers (two) as it was first downs (three).

If this Woodbridge team was going to roll over after senior starting quarterback Anthony Viola was lost for the season in Week Two, it would have done so by now. But fact is, the Barrons have done anything but throw in the towel, falling 14-7 and 12-7 to East Brunswick and Sayreville over the past two weeks. That fortitude pays off tonight.
Prediction: Woodbridge, 14-10

WOODBRIDGE — To the Woodbridge football team, it probably seemed like Jason Addino had cloned himself Friday night.  Addino, a senior defensive back, posted two huge second half plays — a late sack and interception — to stave off a Woodbridge rally as Sayreville posted a 12-7 victory over the Barrons in the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division matchup and spoil the Woodbridge home-opener.

Woodbridge QB goes down to injury
Second straight year Barrons beset by loss of key player
Home News Tribune Online 09/20/07  -   By MARK SPIVEY  -  STAFF WRITER
For the second year in a row, the Woodbridge High School football team has lost its biggest star for the season due to injury.
Barrons senior quarterback Anthony Viola suffered a broken ankle and torn knee ligaments when he was sandwiched awkwardly between multiple defenders in the team's loss to Piscataway last weekend. The play came a little less than a year after then-senior Garrett Mozolic, who ended his career as the top rusher in Woodbridge history, was lost for good in Week 6.
"It's a long season, and we're gonna stick together. That's the only way to overcome any kind of adversity," Barrons head coach Brian Russo said. "We have to keep fighting and pick up the pieces; someone's going to have to step up and make plays."
Viola's doctors are currently contemplating surgery on his injured leg.
Russo plans to rotate at least three players in at quarterback in practice over the coming weeks to find a new No. 1 starter. Those expected to battle for the spot include senior Carlos Sanjurjo, junior Nick Candelario, and freshman Nick Stallone.
"They're all throwing the ball pretty well, and we're going to see who steps up more as a leader," Russo said. "We'll find someone to step up."

PISCATAWAY — The final score of 45-6 may suggest the Piscataway High School football team ran up and down the field and simply manhandled a visiting Woodbridge team.

Saying other Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division teams aren't fast enough to keep up with the Chiefs isn't an insult to those clubs; it's like saying a go-kart isn't fast enough to keep up with a fighter jet. This game was a war of attrition last season, when Woodbridge enjoyed the services of standout tailback Garrett Mozolic and all-area linemen Derek Shea and Chuck Pierson. Those three all have graduated, meaning the Barrons will have to get away from the trench warfare and air it out a bit to prevail. Senior quarterback Anthony Viola has the tools to do just that, and he'll have a few aces popping out of his sleeve.   Prediction: Woodbridge, 14-10

WOODBRIDGE - 2007 Pre-season breakdown!
September 7, 2007  The Star Ledger On-Line
Offense: Anthony Viola carried for five TDs and passed for four last season, his second as the starting QB. With experienced receivers such as Jan Korkowski and Anthony Graham around, Viola's passing numbers could be higher. But Woodbridge is a multiple-I team that usually seeks to possess the ball. It was able to do so last year with the work of then-senior Garrett Mozolic. It should be able to achieve similar results now with junior Christian Mangine.
Defense: Chris Bouchard and Adams Ossaka help the defense slip into rhythm with their sturdy work on the line. Mangine and Anthony Diaz assist with their tough play at LB. Jose Clemente is a proven standout in the secondary.
Etc.: Woodbridge was probably a handful of plays shy of being a playoff team last year. Among its losses in a 4-6 season were a 20-18 game against Colonia, 21-20 against Sayreville, 13-6 against East Brunswick and 20-13 against Old Bridge.

TENNESSEE TECH-BOUND:
Home News Tribune Online 02/8/07
As he began piling up the yardage with finesse and power this past season, the schools started calling for running back Garrett Mozolic of Woodbridge. All the Patriot League schools were lined up, while UConn was the first of the Division Is to make its presence known, followed by a call from Wake Forest.     Then came a blow during the closing minutes of the Barrons' sixth game against J.P. Stevens. A knee injury ended Mozolic's season although he still managed 1,126 yards to become the school's all-time leading rusher.     Several schools backed off at that point as red flags went up.     But head coach Brian Russo went to work, sending out tapes and convincing schools Mozolic would be better than ever. His hard work paid off in the form of a scholarship to Division I-AA Tennessee Tech.     Mozolic visited the campus then canceled visits to UConn and Wagner.
"I feel, and Garrett too, that he could have played on the Division I level had he not been hurt," Russo said. "But Tennessee Tech is a very high level of football. They're playing Auburn next year. I think he'll do great there and I think it's a tremendous opportunity."

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - By mid-afternoon on national signing day Wednesday, Tennessee Tech football coach Watson Brown and his staff had received paperwork on all 13 of the players they expected to join the Golden Eagle roster for the 2007 season...   Garrett Mozolic is a 6-foot, 230-pound bruiser who played runningback and free safety at Woodbridge (N.J.) He also piled up 345 receiving yards on 29 catches and had 544 yards on 34 kickoff returns, with two returned for touchdowns. In all, he compiled 3,492 all-purpose yards and 26 touchdowns.     As a senior, he played just six games before a season-ending injury, and he still rushed for 1,143 yards and 10 touchdowns. On the defensive side he had 61 total tackles, three interceptions, seven passes defended, a blocked kick and caused one fumble in those six contests. He was a first-team all-county and all-area selection and was named third-team all-state, and was named to the New Jersey Super 100.
