Woodbridge football pitches shutout with strong defense and balanced offense

by WoodbridgeFootball.com / MyCentralJersey.com / NJ.com on 10/22/16

, @GregTufaro 11:21 p.m. EDT October 21, 201

Keshaun Henry scored three touchdowns and threw for another as the Woodbridge High School football team shut out Perth Amboy for the second consecutive season, handing the Panthers a 35-0 setback on Friday night.

Henry connected with Messiah Daniels on a two-yard bubble screen for a touchdown. He also caught two scoring strikes from quarterback Donovan Tabon. Henry further highlighted his night with a scoring run.

Da’Avian Ellinton had a 55-yard touchdown run for Woodbridge, which improved to 3-4 and appears to be in excellent position to clinch a North 2 Group IV playoff berth with a win again J.P. Stevens in its next game.

Tabon’s two touchdown passes helped the Barrons build a 15-0 lead with 11:50 left in the second quarter. Daniels’ touchdown reception gave Woodbridge a 22-0 advantage with 7:12 left in the opening half. Henry’s touchdown run with 10;18 remaining in the third quarter pushed the lead to 28-0.

“We had a great game plan going into the game,” Woodbridge head coach Kevin Coleman said about his team’s defensive scheme against Perth Amboy. “They were definitely prepared for our blitzes. We are a pressure team. They had a lot of two-back sets (employing an additional blocker) to try to stop us. When (Perth Amboy) changed (after falling behind), we started to blitz more.”

Coleman said the Barrons “had a good groove” offensively. Woodbridge ran some counters, some jet sweeps and stretched the defense with the passing game.

“We kept them honest,” he said. “We were moving the ball. Hopefully, it carries over to next week.”

WEEK 7 - GMC White Division - Game Predictions

by WoodbridgeFootball.com / MyCentralJersey.com / NJ.com on 10/18/16

By: Charles McDevitt WoodbridgeFootball.com  October 18, 2016  1105

Week 6 Record: 2-3  .400

Woodbridge (2-4) at Perth Amboy (1-4) – Analysis

With no disrespect, I’ll go out on a limb and predict the Barrons defeat the Panthers by 20+ points. That isn’t a “feel good” sentiment, it based on past performances against common opponents. Amboy has posted an 0-3 record against South Plainfield (33-14), St Joseph (43-15), and Kennedy (42-7). They were outscored 118PA - 36PF (-82).

Woodbridge, recorded a 1-2, with 70PF - 63PA (+7). South Plainfield was in the Barrons’s pocket and a late 4th quarter implosion gave it away.  St Joseph was a sound lose (28-6) to a premier team, and Kennedy suffered an embarrassing (52-20) defeat. The Panthers can’t handle what the Barrons are going to put onto the field offensively or defensively.

Woodbridge is sitting eighth in the NJ2-G4. To receive a seeding, there is still work to do with two to go. There are a minimum of 28 PP available in those games, with 14 coming from Perth Amboy, and 14 coming from JP Stevens. The door is still ajar. Those are the facts.

So here is the math. There are 50 PP in the basket. Woodbridge must defeat both Perth Amboy and JP Stevens to add a minumum of 28 PP. If Amboy can get past North Brunswick, add another 3 PP to the total. The winner of the Kennedy at Colonia game will produce 3 more PP, and if Colonia defeats JP Stevens, add another 3 PP.  St Joseph is going to defeat Kennedy so no points there.  Summing up. 50 + 28 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 87 maximum PP.  Will that be enough to earn a seed in the Playoffs? Maybe. It's time to "Strap Up and Deliver".

Woodbridge (2-4) over (x) Perth Amboy (1-4), 7 p.m.

Colonia (2-4) over (x) J.P. Stevens (1-5), 7 p.m.

(x) Carteret (5-0) over South Plainfield (4-2), 7 p.m.

St. Joseph (6-0) over (x) J.F. Kennedy (4-2), 7 p.m.

North Brunswick (0-6) (Bye)

Greg Tufaro's Week 7 GMC football predictions

, @GregTufaro 5:29 p.m. EDT October 20, 2016

Woodbridge (2-4) at Perth Amboy (1-4), 7 p.m.: The Panthers, who have been a strong second-half team over the past couple of seasons, snapped a four-game losing streak with last weekend’s 28-0 blanking of J.P. Stevens. The shutout was the first Perth Amboy posted since 2010. The Barrons are coming off a 29-14 loss to Carteret. Two of their losses – to Manasquan and South Plainfield – were by a combined four points. Pick: Woodbridge 21-18.

GMC WEEK 6 TOP 10

by WoodbridgeFootball.com / MyCentralJersey.com / NJ.com on 10/16/16

, @GregTufaro 1:19 p.m. EDT October 16, 2016

1. Old Bridge (3-1-1):
The Knights remained the only Red Division team without a division loss following a thrilling 24-20 comeback victory over Piscataway. Nick Sodano scored three touchdowns – a 6-yard run, a 44-yard fumble return and a 42-yard run – in the final five minutes to help Old Bridge erase deficits of 10 points and three points. Sodano finished with 127 rushing yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Artur Sitkowski completed 19 of 35 passes for 233 yards. Anthony Imbimbo had nine receptions for 93 yards. Old Bridge’s blemishes are a lopsided loss to undefeated Manalapan, which leads Central Group V with 91.5 power points, and a draw with Edison. Old Bridge can win the division title with victories over New Brunswick (2-4), Sayreville (5-1) and East Brunswick (1-4). Next: at New Brunswick, Friday, 7 p.m.

2. Piscataway (4-1): The Chiefs squandered leads of 10 and three points in the final five minutes of a heartbreaking 24-20 loss to Old Bridge. Running back Elijah Barnwell carried 32 times for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Safety Brevin Donerson recorded a game-high 14 tackles and returned an interception 87 yards for his second defensive touchdown of the year. He also had a forced fumble and a fumble return. Jevon Buckmire (13) and Barnwell (10) were Piscataway’s other top defensive players. Ibn Robinson recorded his sixth sack. Next: at Monroe, Friday, 7 p.m.

3. Sayreville (5-1): The Bombers scored on five of their first six possessions, converting four turnovers along the way into touchdowns, in a 49-7 win over Monroe. Michael Liberti had rushing touchdowns of 18, 2 and 1 yards. Andrew Wille, JaQuae Roberts, Connor Holmes and Colton Redding each had a touchdown for the Bombers, who rebounded from a heartbreaking 27-21 loss to Piscataway. Sayreville’s defense, which pitched a shutout earlier this month in a 28-0 win over Brick Memorial, was once again stout against another triple-option foe. Next: at South Brunswick, Friday, 7 p.m.

READ: NJSIAA football power point rankings for sections with GMC schools

4. South Brunswick (3-2): The Vikings, who have held opponents to a touchdown or less in all three of their victories, blanked East Brunswick 21-0. The win was the 200th of head coach Joe Goerge's career. Xavier Carlisle anchored the defense with 10 tackles, while Justin Shorter and Darius Tisdale each recorded six tackles. Marcus Cerminaro and Felix Quinones each had an interception. In extending its winning streak over the Bears to six games, South Brunswick received a balanced offensive effort. Quarterback Josh Liao completed 11 of 17 passes for 104 yards. He threw a scoring pass to Thomas Joe-Kamara and also rushed for a touchdown. Jaylan Lawson led all rushers with 77 yards and one score on eight carries. South Brunswick has won three of its last four. The Vikings’ only losses were to Old Bridge (28-25) and Piscataway (26-14). Next: vs. Sayreville, 7 p.m.

READ: GMC football schedule for Week 7 and beyond

5. St. Joseph (6-0): The Falcons extended their shutout streak to 11 quarters, blanking their second consecutive opponent with a 42-0 victory over winless Donovan Catholic. Quarterback Mitchel Epstein had three touchdown passes, completing two scoring strikes to Jon Sot and another to A.J. Murray. Luke Yakely had two rushing touchdowns and Jordan Davis also scored on the ground. Next: at J.F. Kennedy, Friday, 7 p.m.

6. Carteret (5-0): The Ramblers continued to display offensive balance and stout defense in a resounding 29-14 victory over Woodbridge, which fell two points shy of a single-game school record in a 52-20 victory over J.F. Kennedy the previous week. Running back Quartius Byrd amassed 234 yards on 11 carries. He had scoring runs of 76 and 49 yards. Quarterback Angelo Golino completed 5 of 9 passes for 97 yards including a 65-yard scoring strike to Jalen Harris and a 16-yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Sharpe. With the victory, Carteret moved into a first-place deadlock with St. Joseph atop the White Division. Next: South Plainfield, Friday, 7 p.m.

7. South Plainfield (4-2): Playing without offensive star Charles Lovett (high ankle sprain) and defensive end Austin Fritze (concussion), the Tigers endured their second consecutive defeat, a 28-20 setback to Colonia. In the absence of Lovett (562 all-purpose yards) and Fritze (team-leading six sacks), quarterback Ryan Marston completed 13 of 18 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. Jean Sapini and Deshai Smith each had 100 receiving yards. The Tigers rushed for 143 yards. They had a touchdown nullified via penalty and failed to score from Colonia’s 2 yard line. Next: at Carteret, Friday 7 p.m.

READ: GMC football division standings

8. Bishop Ahr (4-2): Andrew Brazicki raised his conference-leading rushing total to 739 yards in a 34-0 win over Metuchen, but the Trojans found a new offensive hero against the Bulldogs in Reminiss Funderburk, who rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Funderburk scored on runs of 94 and 54 yards to complement Brazicki, who was Bishop Ahr’s second-leading rusher with 71 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Brazicki also returned an interception 80 yards for a touchdown, while Funderburk also picked off a pass. Marcus Adeniyi continued to anchor the defense, making 11 tackles, three for a loss. Luke Vizzoni contributed 10 tackles – including a pair of sacks – to the win. The Trojans improved to 4-0 in the division behind 294 yards rushing. Next: at Spotswood, Saturday, 1 p.m.

READ: Bishop Ahr ineligible for Blue Division title

9. Spotswood (5-1): The Chargers endured their third consecutive loss to Point Pleasant Beach, dropping a 31-12 decision to the Gulls. Spotswood trailed by just five points early in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Nick Mohr completed 11 of 18 passes for 102 yards. He also scored a rushing touchdown. Paul Toth was credited for a safety and Ryan Szatkowski booted a field goal. Spotswood can clinch its third consecutive Blue Division title with a victory over Bishop Ahr on Saturday. Next: Bishop Ahr, Saturday, 1 p.m.

10. New Brunswick (2-4): After opening the season – its first as a Red Division member – with consecutive losses to perennial powers Piscataway (4-1 with a loss to Old Bridge), South Brunswick (3-2 with losses to Piscataway and Old Bridge) and Sayreville (5-1 with a loss to Piscataway), New Brunswick rebounded to win its next two division games including an impressive 39-14 victory over Edison. New Brunswick’s only other loss is to Middletown South (4-1 with a loss to Red Bank Catholic). The teams that defeated New Brunswick own a combined 16-5 record. Against Edison, quarterback Jah’Bree Seawright-Jeffery completed 12 of 20 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns. Kadas Reams caught six passes for 175 yards and four scores. Curtis Revan had three receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Johnson amassed 115 yards on the ground, most of which came on an 82-yard scoring jaunt. Seawright-Jeffrey also starred on defense, recording 11 tackles and an interception. German Pimental posted a game-high 12 tackles. Next: Old Bridge, Friday, 7 p.m.

WEEK 6 - POWER POINTS - NJ2-G4

North Jersey 2, Group 4 Power Points through Week 6 - 2016
Woodbridge is sitting eight! There is still work to do with two to go! There are a minimum of 31 PP available in those games, with 14 coming from Perth Amboy, and 14 coming from JP Stevens.

That should be enough to earn a seed in the Playoffs. It's time to "Strap Up and Deliver".

Carteret football (5-0) capitalizes on big plays in 29-14 victory over Woodbridge

Carteret's offense has not had any trouble scoring points in its first four games, averaging over 40 per game.

That average might take a hit in a 29-14 victory over Woodbridge, but there no doubting the Ramblers' big-play abilities.

Carteret struck fast — on the first play from scrimmage — when Angelo Golino hit Jalen Harris near midfield and Harris took it to the house for a 65-yard touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Quartius Byrd broke free on a toss to the right side, then cut back across the middle and found an open lane to the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown. Byrd finished the night with 11 carries for 239 yards and two scores.

Byrd capped his huge night with another huge TD run, a 60-yarder off-right-tackle, in the fourth quarter, to put the game out of reach for Woodbridge

Woodbridge kept the game close, with Da'Avian Ellington scoring on a 20-yard run to start the second quarter, closing to within 14-6, but Carteret would answer with six minutes left when Golino connected with Dwayne Sharpe for an 18-yard score to pull ahead, 21-6. Golino finished 6-of-10 passing for 90 yards.

Woodbridge pulled to within 29-14 in the fourth quarter when Donovan Tabon hit a wide-open Keshaun Henry for a 25-yard touchdown.

Woodbridge leads the all-time series 28-27-4, but Carteret has won five of the last six meetings

WOODBRIDGE— Quartius Byrd called it “lovely.” Antoran Chandler said it was “beautiful.”

The Carteret High School running backs were talking about the holes opened by the Ramblers offensive line in a 29-14 win over Woodbridge in a key Greater Middlesex Conference White Division game Friday.

Yes, running backs love those key blocks, as do all the skilled position players. Friday was mostly a game of big plays and defense for the Ramblers. Byrd unofficially rushed for 234 yards on 11 carries with touchdown runs of 76 and 49 yards. Quarterback Angelo Golino threw two scoring passes, a 65-yarder to Jalen Harris to open the game, and a 16-yard touchdown to Dwayne Sharpe. Holder Jarrod Tasnady added a two-point conversion run.

Carteret led 21-6 at halftime, and cruised to the win as the teams traded touchdowns in the second half. Both squads were ranked in the Home News Tribune Top 10—Carteret entered as No. 6, Woodbridge as No. 9.

With the win, the Ramblers (5-0 overall and in the GMC White) tied St. Joseph for first place in the division. Even though Carteret entered undefeated, some media members picked against them. For one, while Woodbridge (2-4, 2-3) had a losing record, the Barrons dropped heartbreakers to difficult South Plainfield and Manasquan by a combined four points.

The Ramblers had played one team with a winning record. They quickly—and for the whole game—showed they were for real.

“All in all, we got tested, and I think we responded,” Carteret coach Matt Yascko said. “We played well tonight. I hate to sound like a coach speak, but it’s one game at a time. We took care of this one and then we get ready for the next one.”

On paper, it wasn’t easy. But on the play’s first game, Golino completed a pass to an open Harris just past midfield. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior took it in for the score despite almost getting tackled right before the goal line. James Hart kicked the first of his three extra points as Woodbridge led 7-0 just 20 seconds into the game.

“It kind of set the tone that we were going to be in attack mode for most of the night,” Yascko said. “And that’s what we did.”

Yascko said the call was for receiver Keanu Chapman, who hurt a knee on the play. Golino made a good read and found Harris for the touchdown pass. Chapman was limited the rest of the game.

Golino continued to make good decisions, and the running game took over. Chandler added 51 yards on 10 carries. The line of center Frank Coghan, guards Farhan Khan and Chris Pena and tackles Demetrius Ruiz and Skyler Daniels did their jobs.

“When the holes open up, it’s right there,” Byrd said. “For us running backs, it’s lovely if the line could block. Then we could run the ball. Without the line, we can’t do anything. And we just love the line.”

Of course, the runners have talent, as well. The “thunder and lightning” duo had combined for over 700 rushing yards entering the game. Friday, the Byrd, 6-1, 210-pound “lightning” senior gave Carteret a 14-0 lead with his 76-yard touchdown with 1:24 left in the first quarter. Byrd went up the middle, cut back and blazed down the left sideline for the long touchdown.

Carteret had its share of outstanding defensive plays, including wrestling star Khan getting a sack to force a punt in the second quarter and Jordan Demorla snagging an interception on Woodbridge’s two-point conversion pass after its first score. In the second half, Ruiz came up with two big sacks, one for a loss of 13 yards and the other for negative nine yards. Additionally, David Pierre had a tackle for a four-yard loss.

The score could have been higher, but Woodbridge twice held when Carteret had a first-and-goal with under four minutes remaining in the second quarter. On the first key play, Alex LaGrippo recovered a fumble inside the 5-yard line. On the second, the Barrons got the ball on downs after two sacks by Marquan Payne. Dylan Leone assisted on the second.

Woodbridge scored on a 20-yard run from Da’Avian Ellington, and on a 24-yard pass from Darin Tabon to Keshawn Henry. Quaasim Glover caught a two-point conversion.

As far as entering as an underdog, that doesn’t seem to bother the Carteret players.

“We don’t feed into that,” Byrd said. “We just work hard in practice and do what we got to do. We know that we got a big chip on our shoulder the rest of these games and what we’re going to keep doing is what we did today. Just keep pounding the ball and work hard in practice.”

And one other thing, that his running back mate Chandler also echoed, to “stay humble.”

FRIDAY

Carteret (4-0) at Woodbridge (2-3), 7 p.m.: Carteret’s defense, stellar over the first three games, during which it allowed a total of 19 points, yielded more than that in last weekend’s 55-32 victory over Colonia. The Ramblers, a perennial power who finished with an uncharacteristic 1-10 record a year ago, are one of the state’s best turnaround stories. Quarterback Angelo Golino (31 of 53 for 493 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions for a 109.2 rating), running backs Quartius Byrd (43 carries, 428 yards, six touchdowns) and Antoran Chandler (47 carries, 301 yards, five touchdowns) have benefited from a vastly improved offensive line. Keanu Chapman (10 catches, 149 yards) and Dwayne Sharpe (eight catches, 128 yards) each have three receiving touchdowns. A balanced offense (eight players have scored at least one touchdown) is averaging a league-leading 418.8 yards from scrimmage per game. Carteret has won the turnover battle with a plus-4 margin. Sharpe (31), Emmanuel Omokha (30), Farhan Khan (27) and Jarrod Tasnady (27) are the Ramblers’ leading tacklers. Khan (three sacks) and David Pierre (two sacks) are top pass rushers. James Hart, who has converted 19 of 22 extra point attempts, gives the Ramblers an edge on special teams as a kicker and punter. Woodbridge snapped a three-game losing streak with a 52-20 victory over J.F. Kennedy in which Keshaun “Scooby” Henry set single-game school records for touchdowns (six), points (40) and scoring receptions (four). The Barrons scored more points last weekend than they registered in four previous games combined. Woodbridge, which has played a more challenging schedule than Carteret, lost two games – Manasquan 7-6 and South Plainfield 15-12 – by a total of four points. Woodbridge is balanced with quarterback Donovan Tabon (40 of 67 for 621 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions for a 112.8 quarterback rating) and running back Da’Avian Ellington, a Carteret transfer who has rushed 69 times for 324 yards and two scores. Quaasim Glover, who led the league in receptions last season, remains dangerous with 20 catches for 264 yards. Nick Nyers, son of former Woodbridge head coach Bill Nyers, leads the conference with 68 tackles. Teammates Antoine Hall (38 tackles) and Alex LaGrippo (33 tackles) also anchor the defense. The Barrons are plus-5 in the turnover department.
Pick: Woodbridge 22-21.

Football Player of Week Story: Zoinks! 'Scooby' snacks on Woodbridge record book

by WoodbridgeFootball.com / MyCentralJersey.com / NJ.com on 10/11/16

, @GregTufaro 11:28 p.m. EDT October 10, 2016

Keshaun “Scooby” Henry received limited touches during practices leading up to last weekend’s game against crosstown rival J.F. Kennedy.

“I limited the amount of touches he got so when he did get the ball he was running angry,” Woodbridge High School football coach Kevin Coleman said. “It kind of translated into the game. I wanted him to be hungry.”

The motivation worked as Henry feasted on the opposing defense for single-game school records of six touchdowns, 40 points and four receiving touchdowns in a 52-20 victory.

“It means a lot to me to be in the record books,” Henry, the Home News Tribune’s Football Player of the Week, said of setting new standards for a high school with a storied 93-year football tradition.

Against the Mustangs, Henry totaled 233 all-purpose yards, 19 more than he amassed rushing and receiving in Woodbridge’s four previous games combined.

I told him before the game, it’s time for our playmakers to make some plays,” said Coleman, whose Barrons scored 14 more points against J.F. Kennedy than they did in their four previous games combined.

“(After the game) I just told him that’s something I’ve been waiting for him to do for quite some time. I think he has the ability to put those type of performances together.”

Henry, who had just nine touches against J.F. Kennedy, added a rushing touchdown and a kickoff return for a score to his four receiving touchdowns.

He had a punt return for a touchdown and a touchdown pass for a score – Henry played running back, slot back and lined up in Wildcat formation – nullified because of penalties.

As good as Henry’s on-field performance was, however, Woodbridge High School Principal Glenn Lottmann said the senior captain is an even better person than he is a football player.

“No one can doubt his athletic ability,” Lottmann said. “But in my opinion, his athletic ability is the least impressive of his traits. He is friendly, respectful, smart and he’s so humble. If you just met ‘Scooby’ in the hallway, you wouldn’t know he’s one of the best athletes in our school. I hope to God my son grows up to be a gentleman like ‘Scooby.’ That’s the kind of kid he is. You can’t help but smile when you see him. He’s going to go far in life.”

In a role that is often reserved almost exclusively for upperclassmen, Henry has served since his sophomore year in the Woodbridge Township Public Schools’ STARS (Students Traveling A Road To Success) program, a partnership between the high school and Fords Middle School in which a high school student mentors a middle school student.

“That’s uncommon for a sophomore to do,” Lottmann said, noting Henry “stood out from the day (he entered high school) and we got him (as a STARS mentor).”

Henry is known affectionately on and off campus simply as “Scooby,” a nickname his mother gave him because he loved watching Scooby-Doo cartoons as a youth.

“I guess it stuck,” Henry said of his moniker. “All throughout my whole life – teachers, principals, everybody – just called me Scooby.”

If the Barrons are to turn their season around, Henry and several other gifted skill position players including incumbent Greater Middlesex Conference receiving leader Quaasim Glover (46 catches in 2015), quarterback Donovan Tabon and running back Da’avian Ellington will have to continue their prowess behind a steadily improving offensive line.

Woodbridge, ranked No. 9 in the Home News Tribune Top 10 with a deceptive 2-3 record, lost two games – 7-6 to Manasquan and 15-12 to South Plainfield – by a total of four points. The team’s other setback was 28-6 to undefeated St. Joseph, which led by just eight points at halftime.

“We were struggling as far as the offense was concerned,” Coleman said. “We just weren’t able to put things together. We didn’t do anything different in practice (before the J.F. Kennedy game). We just practiced hard and were holding each other accountable on offense.”

Coleman said he knew during the early stages of last weekend’s game that Friday night was going to belong to Henry, who the coaching staff utilized all over the field to ensure the ball would end up in its star player’s hands.

“We’ve got to get him the ball,” Coleman said he remembers telling his assistants, “because he’s going to break out at any moment.”

Henry’s six touchdowns against J.F. Kennedy shattered a 61-year old record which the late Lee Roy Alexander previously set in a game against New Brunswick on Nov. 12, 1955.

Tabon tied the single-game school record of five touchdown passes (including one to Glover), which Kyle Anderson set in an Oct. 22, 2011 game against Monroe. Tabon completed 9 of 11 passes for 261 yards.

The 52 points Woodbridge registered fell two shy of the single-game school mark the Barrons set in a Nov. 4, 1961 victory over Carteret.

What won’t ever show up in the record books is Henry’s personality, the trait that distinguishes him from his peers.

“Scooby is a great kid,” Coleman said. “As soon as I met him as a freshman, he was always honorable and well-mannered. He’s a wonderful kid. Inside the building, he’s respected highly by his teachers and his classmates.”

Week 5 Record: 5-0  1.000

Carteret (4-0) at Woodbridge (2-3) – Analysis:

Carteret

Offense: The Ramblers have scored 163 points (40.8 pg). They are a run first offense, and have a 309 yards rushing pga with the brunt of the workload going to Quartius Byrd RB (43 carries for 428 yards, 107 pg, 6 TD), Antoran Chandler RB (47 carries for 301 yards, 75.3 pg, 5 TD), and Angelo Golino QB (28 carries for 197 yards, 49.3 pg, 1 TD).  Their passing game is anchored by Golino (31 completions on 53 attempts for 439 yards, 8 TD and only 2 INTs) to Keanu Chapman WR (10 receptions for 149 yards and 3 TD), and Dwayne Sharpe WR (8 receptions for 128 yards and 3 TD).

Defense: The Ramblers have allowed 51 points against (12.8 pg), and are led by Jarrod Tasnady DB, Justin Taylor LB, Dwayne Sharpe LB, Jordan Demorla LB, Emmanuel Omokha LB, and Farhan Khan DT.

Special Teams: James Hart PK (19 made for 22 attempted PATs, .864 average, and 0 made for 1 attempted FG, .000 average).

Woodbridge

Offense: The Barrons have scored 95 points (19.0 pg). They have a balanced offensive attack with 131.4 yards rushing pga with Da’Avain Ellington RB (69 carries for 324 yards, 64.8pg) , Keyshaun Henry QB / RB (36 carries for 174 yards 34.8 pg), and Messiah Daniels RB (5 carries for 109 yards, 21.8 pg) leading the way. They also have a quality passing game, and have a 125.8 yards pga. They are led by Donovan Tabon QB (40 completions on 67 attempts for 621 yards and 7 TD). His big targets are Quaasim Glover WR (20 receptions for 264 yards, 13.2 pr), Henry (13 receptions for 192 yards, 14.8 pr), and Messiah Daniels (5 receptions for 106 yards, 21.2 pr).

Defense: The Barrons have allowed 84 points against (16.8 pg) and are led by Nick Nyers LB (68 TKL), Alex LaGrippo DT (36 TKL), Antoine Hall LB (38 TKL), Marquan Payne DE (28 TKL), Christian Figueroa LB (22 TKL), Dylan Leone LB (28 TKL), Quaasim Glover SFT (23 TKL), and Antonio Lopez DE (20 TKLS).

Special Teams: Woodbridge has no kicking game and cannot depend on PAT/FG points in a close contest. The Barrons have made 1 PAT in 10 attempts, .100 average.

With that said:  The Ramblers and Barrons have competed against two common opponents, Colonia and Kennedy. Both have defeated their opponents with Carteret holding a slight offensive scoring edge of 83PF to 71PF. But it flips the other way on the defensive side to the Barrons with 34PA to 39PA. Very close. Woodbridge must stop one player, Quartius Byrd RB, and his explosive ground game. If that takes a primary and secondary spy, so be it. Force someone else to carry the load. Home field may be an advantage, and if Woodbridge shows up like they did last week in Iselin, its lights out. If they don’t bring that powerful and focused effort, it’s going to be lights out for them. Understand, Carteret is a hungry team with a good coaching staff. They are fighting for their own playoff seeding as is Woodbridge. But the biggest reason to “Strap Up and Deliver” this Friday, October 14 at 7pm, is without a win over Carteret and the reaping of the Power Points associated with them, there isn’t a clear path to the playoffs. It’s as simple as that. One play at a time, one game at a time. Carteret is next!

(x) Woodbridge (2-3) over Carteret (4-0)

GMC WEEK 5 TOP 10 - THNT

by WoodbridgeFootball.com / MyCentralJersey.com / NJ.com on 10/09/16

, @GregTufaro 3:31 p.m. EDT October 9, 2016

1. Piscataway (4-0): The Chiefs snapped a three-game on-field losing streak against the Bombers (Piscataway earned a forfeit in 2014), holding on for a 27-21 victory. Tray Hogan’s interception just outside the red zone in the closing minute sealed the win. Elijah Barnwell rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Mike Petite also had a rushing touchdown. Backup quarterback Joseph Hatcher, filling in for injured starter Danny Haus (back) in the second half, connected with Nasir James on a 61-yard scoring strike. End Ibn Robinson, Brevin Donerson and Petite each recorded six tackles. Robinson had two sacks. Next: at Old Bridge, Friday, 7 p.m.

2. Sayreville (4-1): Senior quarterback Jayson DeMild completed 21 of 42 passes for 277 yards and also rushed for 52 yards in a heartbreaking 27-21 loss to Piscataway. Jahsim Floyd caught two touchdowns passes in the fourth-quarter as the Bombers rallied from a 27-7 deficit. Colton Redding recovered a flubbed punt attempt in the end zone for a touchdown. Michael Liberti led Sayreville rushers with 45 yard on 11 carries. Mike Germann (8), Christian Platon (7) and Antwan Golson (6) spearheaded the defense. Next: vs. Monroe, 7 p.m.

3. Old Bridge (2-1-1): Bye. Next: vs. Piscataway, Friday, 7 p.m.

4. South Brunswick (2-2): The defending Central Group V champions proved they remain a title contender with an impressive 42-7 drubbing of an Edison team that lost by just five points to Sayreville and battled Old Bridge to a triple-overtime draw. Quarterback Josh Liao completed all six of his passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns. Felix Quinones (136 receiving yards) and Justin Shorter each had two scoring grabs. Shorter also intercepted two passes. Xavier Cargile anchored a defense that recorded four sacks with 11 tackles. The Vikings also got their running game on track as seven rushers combined for 154 yards. Thomas Joe-Kamara had a 17-yard touchdown jaunt. Next: at East Brunswick, Friday, 7 p.m.

5. St. Joseph (5-0): Playing without their starting quarterback and tailback, the Falcons displayed their depth and balance with an impressive 37-0 blanking of previously undefeated South Plainfield, which had won the two previous meetings between the schools. Luke Yakely rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. Backup signal caller Mitchel Epstein completed 11 of 14 passes for 203 yards and two scores. Jon Sot had three catches for 85 yards including a 39-yard touchdown reception and also booted a 31-yard field goal. With the win, St. Joseph took sole possession of first place in the White Division. Next: at Donovan Catholic, Friday, 7 p.m.

6. Carteret (4-0): The Ramblers rolled to a 55-32 victory over Colonia to remain undefeated and one game behind White Division-leading St. Joseph in the win column. Carteret rolled up 497 yards from scrimmage, 342 of which came on the ground. The Ramblers scored in every quarter. Angelo Golino completed 12 of 17 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Antoran Chandler (139 yards) and Quartius Byrd (129 yards) were Carteret's leading rushers. Keanu Chapman amassed 259 all-purpose yards. Dwayne Sharpe recorded 12 tackles and Farhan Khan registered two sacks.  Next: at Woodbridge, Friday, 7 p.m.

7. Edison (1-2-1): The Eagles dropped their 12th consecutive game to South Brunswick, falling 42-7. For the second straight weekend, Edison’s defense allowed 42 points, but unlike a 42-42 triple-overtime draw with Old Bridge, the Eagles’ offense was stymied. James Stewart’s two-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the second quarter cut the Vikings’ deficit to 14 points, but Edison could get no closer. Next: at New Brunswick, Friday, 7 p.m.

8. South Plainfield (4-1): Charles Lovett and Ryan Marston combined to complete 11 of 18 passes for 106 yards, but the Tigers never found the end zone in a 37-0 loss to undefeated St. Joseph. The Falcons limited South Plainfield to 76 rushing yards. Dillon Harris recorded eight tackles. Next: at Colonia, Friday, 7 p.m.

9. Woodbridge (2-3): Keshaun “Scooby” Henry set three single-game records for the storied Woodbridge program in an impressive 52-20 victory over crosstown rival J.F. Kennedy. Henry set new standards for touchdowns (six), points (40 including four conversion points) and touchdown receptions (four), according to Woodbridge High School sports historian Nick Sardone. Quarterback Donovan Tabon tied the single-game school record of five touchdowns passes, which Kyle Anderson posted in an Oct. 22, 2011 game against Monroe. Tabon completed 9 of 11 passes for 261 yards. Next: vs. Carteret, Friday, 7 p.m.

10T. Spotswood (5-0): Nick Mohr’s 41-yard scoring strike to Chance Fee with 20 seconds left lifted Spotswood to a thrilling 42-35 comeback victory over Highland Park. The two-time defending Blue Division champion Chargers extended their division winning streak to 13 games. Next: vs. Point Pleasant Beach, Saturday, 1 p.m.

10T. Bishop Ahr (3-2): Andrew Brazicki amassed 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in a 39-8 victory over Dunellen. Christian Cardosa carried six times for 109 yards and added two scores. John Edwards contributed a 44-yard touchdown run to the victory, while teammate Josh Minnick had 10 carries for 35 yards and a score. Luke Vizzoni registered 11 tackles, including two for a loss. Brazicki and Toure’ Simon combined for 13 tackles. Brazicki also had a sack. Next: vs. Metuchen, Friday, 7 p.m.

Henry shattered three of the 93-year old Woodbridge football program's records

by WoodbridgeFootball.com / MyCentralJersey.com / NJ.com on 10/09/16

, @GregTufaro 3:20 p.m. EDT October 9, 2016

Keshaun “Scooby” Henry, who will be featured in Wednesday’s Home News Tribune as its Player of the Week, set three single-game records for the storied Woodbridge High School football program in the Barrons’ impressive 52-20 victory over crosstown rival J.F. Kennedy on Friday night.

Henry set new standards at the high school for touchdowns (six), points (40 including four conversion points) and touchdown receptions (four), according to Woodbridge High School sports historian Nick Sardone.

For perspective on the significance of Henry's record-setting performance, consider the Barrons have played 850 games during 93 years of football at the high school (visit Charles McDevitt's outstanding web site HERE for more information on the Barrons).

Quarterback Donovan Tabon tied the single-game school record of five touchdowns passes, which Kyle Anderson posted in an Oct. 22, 2011 game against Monroe. Tabon completed 9 of 11 passes for 261 yards.

Henry’s six touchdowns – which included a scoring run and kickoff return – shattered a 61-year old record which the late Lee Roy Alexander previously set in a game against New Brunswick on Nov. 12, 1955.

Henry had just nine touches in the entire game. He caught four passes for 130 yards, carried five times for 22 yards and returned a kickoff 81 yards for 233 all-purpose yards.

“I think he had a coming out party, and I think he put on a show,” Woodbridge head coach Kevin Coleman said. “You could see it in his eyes.”

The 52 points Woodbridge scored fell two shy of the single-game school mark the Barrons set in a Nov. 4, 1961 victory over Carteret.

The 1961 Woodbridge squad featured one of the best players in school history, George Fair, who went on to star at Syracuse University and was a member of the Home News Tribune’s All-Century Team.

North Jersey 2, Group 4 Power Points through Week 5 - 2016
Woodbridge is sitting nine! There is work to do with three to go! There are a minimum of 46 PP available in those games, with 21 coming from Carteret. There is no assured path to a playoff seed without those points. Those are the facts. It's time to "Strap Up and Deliver".
